In the year to June, South Africa connected more renewable capacity than in the three years before it combined. The number is real. What it does not tell you is where the queue now stalls.

The constraint moved

For most of the last decade the binding constraint was generation. Projects were financed, panels arrived, and the question was whether anyone would build them. That question has been answered.

Capacity is no longer a generation problem. It is a queue-management problem, and the queue is administrative.

Connection studies, not turbines, set the pace this year. Twelve months of operating data now exist where previously there were only projections, and in broad terms the projections held on volume and missed on timing.

What it means for 2027

The next data point lands in the new quarter. Until then the honest position is that the direction is settled and the pace is not.
